According to DoD 5220.22M standard, physical destruction hard drives and other storage media are destroyed to prevent access to data. This involves either shredding the drive into tiny pieces/ drilling a series of holes/ deformation into the hard drive platters. This approach doesn’t always destroy the data, but makes the drive inoperable, thereby preventing data recovery by ordinary means.
